Insight Assessment critical thinking tests available in Arabic, Chinese-Simplified, Chinese-Traditional, Dutch, English, Farsi, Finnish, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish & Vietnamese translations

Thinking assessments should be in the test taker’s one’s native language. We believe in testing thinking—not testing English as a second language (ESL) skills. We live in a global multi-lingual world.  Ideas, curriculum, schools and businesses cross national and language boundaries.

You should expect your thinking assessments to support the language needs of your test takers. Language must be a consideration when assigning a critical thinking test.  Students or workers may not be able to demonstrate their true reasoning skills if their language comprehension is inadequate to interpret the question and answer choices and to understand the question being asked.

Insight Assessment has crafted our multilingual assessments to minimize the possibility that the measure of an individual’s thinking skills is affected by language ability and comprehension.  Insight Assessment clients want the most accurate thinking skills and dispositions assessment; that’s why they choose the high quality, culturally appropriate translations of our comprehensive range of assessments .

Before you choose an assessment or a translation consider:

  • Are you measuring their thinking skills? Or are you measuring their English reading skills? Many clients use culturally appropriate translations of our thinking assessments to minimize the English as a second language (ESL) impact when assessing diverse groups of students.  These individuals are taking the same test (in different languages); therefore group results can still be used to compare and identify the strongest thinkers and teams.
  • Do all your test takers understand the assessment process? Other clients prefer to assess an individual’s performance in an English speaking workplace or learning environment.  They choose to use the English language version of the assessment.  Our flexible online testing interface allows for the use of combinations of languages for test, instructions and the login process.
  • Who needs the comprehensive data reported for each test taker and group?  Test-taker group and individual reports can be delivered in English or the appropriate language to maximize the impact of the results. Test taker results can be grouped as a whole or by the language in which the test was presented to the test taker.  Contact us to discuss your specific needs.
  • Who ensures the quality of the translations? Our clients need consistent metrics that permit the reliable comparison of group results when a test has been taken in multiple languages. Insight Assessment collaborates with international scholars who are native language speakers; rigorous iterative translation procedures are used to assure validity, reliability and cultural competence is achieved in the authorized translations. Our multicultural capabilities go beyond the basic language and include many country-specific variants, date formatting, number formatting, image selection, symbol selection and color selection. Translations in more than 20 languages are used in over 60 countries.

Insight Assessment is committed to excellence and precision of thinking. Contact us to discuss how our language flexibility will strengthen your multicultural assessment program.

Custom Questions

Custom questions enable test administrators to better organize their results.  Custom questions are used to gather the classification and demographic metrics needed to support analysis and grouping of test results.

Insight Assessment's testing system enables clients to create up to ten custom demographic items.  Response options include selecting choices provided by the client or free response. There are also five default demographic items which clients may elect to eliminate or retain. Here are some frequently asked questions about getting the most out of our custom question option:

1. What kinds of questions can I ask the people I’m testing using the custom demographics items?

Just about anything that it is legal to ask.  For example, you can ask about educational background, employment background, which department or work group a person is a member of, or how much time a person spends on a given activity.  If you know the choices you want test takers to select from, you can supply them. If you want the test takers to enter a free text response, that works too.

2. What are some examples of custom demographic items?

Here are four examples.  You are able to create your own custom demographic items to best fit with your assessment plans.

  •  Type your student ID number here:  _______________
  •  What is your highest level of formal education?
    • Advanced degree
    • Baccalaureate degree
    • Associates degree
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Eighth Grade
    • Fourth Grade
    • None
  • Which professor assigned you to take this test?
    • Adams
    • Gomez
    • McDonnell
    • Smith
  • Which Division of our Company do you work in?
    • Accounting
    • Customer Relations
    • Human Resources
    • Marketing
    • Physical Plant & Security
    • Research & Development
    • Upper Management

3. I want to do a pretest and posttest analysis , but anonymity is important.  How can I set that up in the IA testing system?

There is a very straightforward procedure using the custom demographics option. First create an identifier that will link a given person’s pretest with that person’s posttest.  The identifier can be a four digit pin number, for example, that you create. Assign each individual their unique identifier.  You will then ask them to insert that unique identifier as a free response answer to a custom question.  Each person will do that when they login to take their pretest and again when they login to take their posttest. When you download test results in spreadsheet form, use that code to sort the data and, thereby, associate each person’s pretest and posttest. The custom demographic item you would create might look like this:

Write the code number you were assigned here __________________

4. Does Insight Assessment supply any demographic items automatically?

Yes, there are five optional default demographic questions. Clients can elect to eliminate or retain any or all of these five.  The first three are free response items, which enable the responder to enter anything they wish whether it is accurate or not.  The last two on the list provide responders with the option of declining to provide the requested information.

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity

5. How can I learn more about creating custom demographic items or eliminating one or more of the default demographic items?

Easy, just contact Insight Assessment. We are happy to assist clients in getting the most helpful information possible when using our testing instruments and our powerfully versatile testing system.

Many projects using Insight Assessment instruments to evaluate critical thinking skills and mindset attributes have been awarded funding by major governmental agencies which evaluate highly competitive research grants. In the United States these include the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

Critical thinking, at its most basic level, is the process of reflective and fair-minded decision making concerning what to believe or what to do.  This is why researchers are focusing more and more attention on effective methods for developing a sustained willingness and ability to engage problems and concerns using critical thinking.

Insight Assessment tools to measure critical thinking provide many advantages to researchers.  These objective measures have been developed to be culturally relevant in all language translations. Free of gender bias and tailored to educational level, they provide the researcher a  valid and reliable method for measuring individual differences and group characteristics for human reasoning skills and mindset attributes.  Insight Assessment tools are well-respected and well-known.  With the assurance of the highest standards of instrument development, all research can be addressed using optimal and superior design. Doctoral dissertations and externally funded research proposals in many nations have relied on them to determine the effectiveness of training programs for business, education and government agencies.

ICOT presentation

The ICOT business sessions were energetic and exciting, clearly a highpoint for the conference.

The most interesting part of this year’s ICOT conference in Bilbao, Spain was the conversation in the business sessions about why some businesses have been slow to see the value of hiring individuals with strong reasoning and decision making skills and mindset. This seemed surprising to participants, because the value to their businesses was so obvious. Business leaders agreed that they need HR analytic tools that enable them to gather objective data about the attributes and skills that most matter today: reasoning and decision-making.   Pete Facione, a senior researcher at Insight Assessment, described these essential characteristics in a successful executive, and how they are rarely assessable using traditional interview tools (interviews, resumes, letters, past positions held). “These are unreliable indicators of reasoning skills and leadership attributes. Too many false positives and false negatives. But these essential skills and attributes can be measured before costly interviews or poor hires occur.”  Using data from INSIGHT Executive test results, he showed how candidates could fail to manifest many of the key attributes in spite of claims that they might make to the contrary.

ICOT roundtable

Smart hiring requires the analytics provided by the INSIGHT series of mindset and thinking skills measures .  Facione suggested that job candidates at all levels should be asked to test their reasoning and mindset prior to being offered interviews; those who walked away were likely to have little confidence in their own reasoning and not be candidates that the company would prize.  And, he added, during the interviews, the finalists should be challenged to demonstrate their skills and their interaction styles by applying them to genuine workplace problems that they analyze and discuss interactively.

Each year new doctoral students begin dissertation studies using Insight Assessment instruments to measure critical thinking skills and mindset. This academic year about 40 dissertation students have collected data here in the US and internationally. Study samples included students and trainees in:

  • K-12 schools (TER, CM3, CCTST, M-25),
  • Business education programs (BCTST),
  • Exercise science programs (CCTST, HSRT),
  • Military training sites (MDCTI),
  • Health care training and delivery sites (HSRT, CCTDI), and
  • STEM education programs (CCTST, CCTDI)

Congratulations to all the new PhD graduates this Spring. We welcome you to the community of scholars studying reasoning skills and mindset, and stand ready to provide valid and reliable measures for your future studies. We hope that your future research will help improve human decision-making, and lead to innovative problem-solving and new insight development.
