Purpose

Getting the problem right and reasoning correctly to an optimal decision are two high impact business thinking processes

Strength in critical thinking is predictive of employee effectiveness and successful hires. Business professionals and business education students must be able to apply the knowledge of their profession to analyze problems and to formulate and evaluate business decisions and solutions. Critical thinking is at the very heart of this process.  The Business Critical Thinking Skills Test is a case-based reasoning skills assessment which is specifically designed to evaluate the critical thinking skills of business students and working professionals.

  • Only the best problem solvers will enable companies to succeed in today’s global market, so employees and graduates with strong critical thinking skills are in demand throughout the world. The BCTST is used to assess an individual’s reasoning skills and to secure a thinking skills score as an element in a comprehensive admissions application process.

  • The BCTST is used in educational settings for learning outcomes assessment and to gather program evaluation, accreditation and research data at the Business baccalaureate and graduate level.

Overview

The Business Critical Thinking Skills Test (BCTST) provides an objective measure of the core reasoning skills needed for reflective decision making and problem solving in business and workplace settings. The BCTST was developed and field tested to present problems using business-relevant topics and, in some cases, with data presented in images and diagrams. The result is a test that broadly represents the reasoning ability required to be a skillful critical thinker in the business profession.

  • The difficulty level of the BCTST makes this instrument appropriate for testing the critical thinking skills of persons aspiring to careers in business management and leadership as well as masters and baccalaureate prepared individuals.

  • Using mini-cases and vignettes drawn from common business and workplace contexts, test items range in difficulty and complexity. The BCTST can be administered in 50 to 60 minutes.

Scales Reported

Good critical thinking results in a competitive advantage over less skilled decision makers.  Scores reported on the BCTST include: Overall Reasoning Skills as well as Analysis, Inference, Evaluation, Induction, Deduction, and Numeracy. These scores can be benchmarked against appropriate comparison groups.

Recommended Companion Assessments

Engaging problems and making decisions using critical thinking involves both skills and habits of mind. For a complete assessment of a test taker’s critical thinking, it is recommended that both skills and dispositions be measured. Using companion assessments results in a comprehensive measurement of whether a test taker is ‘willing and able’ to think well.

We recommend that the BCTST be taken in conjunction with the Business Attribute Inventory (BAI) or the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI). Our client relations specialists will help you determine the optimal disposition tool for your objective.
