Everyday Numeracy Blunders: Why Numeracy in Critical Thinking Matters 

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where someone’s math or logic just didn’t add up? We often assume that adults naturally develop “numeracy”—the ability to work comfortably with numbers and make logical decisions with quantitative information. But as you’ll see, even everyday tasks can reveal major gaps in our basic quantitative and logical reasoning. 

The Grocery Bagging Incident 

I was once at the supermarket, double-bagging my groceries to prevent any unfortunate handle tears or bottom blowouts. An assistant manager rushed over and insisted, “Stop that. You’re wasting our bags!” 

I asked why, pointing out that using two bags together strengthens them against heavier items. The manager responded, “That only happens if you’re putting too much stuff in a single bag. Just split your items between two separate bags.” 

I paused, trying to make sense of it. Instead of two doubled-up bags, the manager wanted me to use two separate bags—essentially using the exact same number of bags but arranged differently. That was the “solution.” 

In the end, I left with four single bags instead of two double-bagged ones, all while the assistant manager seemed satisfied that I hadn’t “double bagged.” The outcome? The same number of total bags used, just arranged differently. 

This illustrates a real-life case of poor numeracy: the difference between appearances and actual quantities. If the goal was to reduce bag usage, the manager’s directive simply didn’t do that. 

A Tale of Two Vitamin Bottles 

Look at this image of two different bottles of vitamin C tablets. Let’s call them orange bottle and green bottle. Anyone can purchase dietary supplements, like these, in supermarkets and pharmacies.  They are sold “over the counter” which means no prescription needed.  There is little effective regulation of the labeling of products in the dietary supplement industry.     

Both bottles contain 60 chewable tablets.  Both show a milligram (mg) number on the naming label. The orange bottle shows “500 mg” the green bottle’s label says “1000 mg.”    

Here’s a question from the Insight Basecamp professional development Skill Builder about that image.   

Assuming that the prices for the orange bottle and the green bottle are essentially equal, which one is the better buy?  Which choice is the best option from the limited set of options here:   

  1. The orange bottle. Orange is the right color for vitamin C, which comes from oranges.  

  1. The green bottle.  It says 1000 mg., but the orange bottle says only 500 mg.  

  1. Neither.  Vitamin C supplements should not be sold without a prescription.  

  1. The green bottle because it is bigger and so it probably contains more product.  

  1. The orange bottle because it is smaller and so it is probably of higher quality.   

  1. None of the other answer choices are very sensible. 

Perhaps you noticed that the small print on the green bottle under the bigger font “1000 mg” says “per serving.” In the required “Supplement Facts” label on the back of the green bottle we learn that a serving is two tablets.  That means that each tablet in the green bottle is 500 mg. The Supplement Facts label on the orange bottle says the same thing. Each tablet is 500 mg. A serving is two tablets.  

There is no particular reason why a busy shopper should assign greater value to either the green or the orange bottle.  The best response from those offered in A through F was probably “None of the other answer choices are very sensible”    

When it comes to labeling over-the-counter medicines and supplements, the long-standing and widely followed industry practice is to put the tablet size on the front label.  That’s what shoppers have come to expect.  That’s what the orange bottle does.  It follows the standard industry practice by stating “500 mg” on the front naming label.  

So why did the green bottle put “1000 mg” front and center on its naming label? Hmm… Could it be that the green bottle wanted to take advantage of a busy shopper thinking (wrongly) that the tablets inside were 1000 mg? Perhaps expecting that people might jump to the mistaken conclusion that the green bottle was double the value of the orange bottle?    

But, of course, if the shopper would take a moment to read the fine print, it would be clear that the “1000 mg” referred to the serving size.    

Oh…, I see. Apparently, the shopper is to blame for being misled. The information on the green bottle was 100% accurate, if only the shopper had examined it in detail.  It’s not the bottle’s fault if shoppers do not bring a healthy sense of skepticism to their purchasing and maybe apply a bit of critical thinking.  

Even with all the consumer protections we have in place, the old proverb still applies. “Caveat emptor.”  Let the buyer beware.
