Graduate Level Critical Thinking Skills

Overview

The Graduate Level Critical Thinking package is calibrated for highly skilled scientists, technologists or individuals with doctoral preparation.  It features two powerful tools. The CCT G835 assesses essential critical thinking skills.  The  California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) is an internationally known instrument used to measure attributes associated with excellence in critical thinking.

Excellent skills alone are only half of the equation. Cognitive skills unsupported by strong thinking mindset are less productive.  A strong critical thinking mindset is a set of mental habits or disciplines that drives effective critical thinking and problem-solving. Together skills and mindset drive us to think well when we have problems to solve, decisions to make, and questions about what to believe and whom to trust.

The CCT G835 is designed to differentiate critical thinking skills well in groups of doctoral level students and working professionals who have very strong educational preparation. The CCT G835 offers discrimination at the high end of the cognitive skills spectrum.   The CCTDI is specifically designed to measure the disposition to engage problems and make decisions using critical thinking.

This pair of challenging assessments have been adopted by selective graduate and post graduate programs that require strong educational preparation. It also is increasingly an admissions tool for selective health graduate programs.

Mindset Attributes Assessed

The (CCTDI) measures seven attributes that influence an individual’s capacity to learn and to effectively apply critical thinking skills:

  • Truthseeking
  • Open-mindedness
  • Analyticity
  • Systematicity
  • Confidence in Reasoning
  • Inquisitiveness
  • Maturity of Judgment

Critical Thinking Skills Assessed

The CCT G835 provides scores for Overall reasoning as well as five core components of strong thinking

  • Analytical Skills
  • Inference Skills
  • Evaluative Skills
  • Inductive Reasoning Skills
  • Deductive Reasoning Skills

Data Reports

Critical thinking data is used for retention and student success initiatives as well as prescreening applicants.

The metrics reported have been rigorously calibrated to identify how decisions were made and to measure the application of reasoning skills. Comprehensive individual provide realistic analysis of  strengths and weaknesses in 12 components of excellence in thinking and reasoning. Printable individual reports document specific strengths and areas for growth.

Group reports provide the tables and graphics needed to compare student achievement with national norms and to analyze individual and group performance. A norm-referenced percentile ranking is provided for skills assessments.  The CCT G835 has percentile norms available for use with 4-year undergraduate and graduate students.

The demands for demonstration of critical thinking increase, naturally, as the educational levels advance.  But there is no level, including pre-school, that is too soon.  And, no level, including post-doctoral research, is too late to continually strengthen critical thinking.
