Health Science Reasoning Package

Overview

The Health Science Reasoning Package is calibrated for trainees in undergraduate and graduate health science educational programs. It features two assessments that are used world wide at high ranking health science education programs and at top rated medical centers to measure critical thinking in students and practicing professionals.  Both assessments are available in multiple languages.

Critical thinking is a process which requires strong skills. But, like anything that requires strong skills to achieve success, the individual or team of people engaging in that process must have the motivation to apply their skills to reach their goal.  Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of a person’s critical thinking abilities requires measuring skills and mindset attributes (dispositions).  The Health Science Reasoning Package is designed to meet this need. It provides research-based data on the capacity and desire to engage complex problems using sound critical thinking and quantitative reasoning.

Skills Assessed by the Health Science Reasoning Test (HSRT)

Scores on the HSRT have been found to predict successful professional licensure and high clinical performance ratings.

The HSRT Overall Reasoning score targets strength or weakness in making reflective reasoned judgments about what to believe or what to do. In addition, scores are reported for:

  • Analysis
  • Interpretation
  • Inference
  • Evaluation
  • Explanation
  • Induction
  • Deduction
  • Numeracy

Mindset Attributes Assessed by the CCTDI

The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) measures seven attributes that influence an individual’s capacity to learn and to effectively apply critical thinking skills:

  • the disposition toward truth-seeking or bias,
  • the disposition toward open-mindedness or intolerance,
  • the disposition toward anticipating possible consequences or being heedless of them,
  • the disposition toward proceeding in a systematic or unsystematic way,
  • the disposition toward being confident in the powers of reasoning or mistrustful of thinking,
  • the disposition toward being inquisitive or resistant to learning
  • the disposition toward mature and nuanced judgment or toward rigid simplistic thinking.

Data Reported

Data about relative strength and weakness in critical thinking is highly relevant for Health Science programs.  Critical thinking data is used for retention and student success initiatives, to prescreen applicants and to identify and support at risk students.

Our assessment report package provides the tables and graphics needed to compare your students’ achievement with national norms and to identify individual and group strengths and weaknesses. Online testing includes an individual printable test taker report to document the scores of each individual with a short interpretative text.

Numerical and categorical interpretation of strength are reported. A norm-referenced percentile ranking is provided for skills assessments.  The HSRT has percentile norms available for use in a variety of test populations including practicing professionals, graduate students, 4-year undergraduate and community college students.

User Manuals provide comprehensive information how to optimally interpret Insight Assessment results reports.
