Why Business and Engineering Deans Assess Critical Thinking

Everyone knows that stronger critical thinking enables professionals to make better decisions and to solve complex problems. However, given the demanding and content-rich student assignments and exams in STEM and Business professional programs, why do academic deans and directors add assessments specifically targeting critical thinking?

Should we not expect that developing strong critical thinking is a natural outcome of completing an undergraduate or graduate program in STEM and Business?

Deans do not take anything for granted. Their motto is, “If you don’t assess it, you can’t fix it.” The deans know that the reputations of their schools and the success of their graduates depend on assuring that their programs produce professionals who have the skills, mindset, and knowledge to become leaders.

The Business Critical Thinking Skills Test (BCTST) is the assessment of choice for Deans of Business. STEM deans use the STEM Thinking Skills Test (STEM).
