Most of us would answer that the soda costs $0.50, which would mean that the cheeseburger would cost $2.00. Add those together and get $2.50. But there is one problem. The cheeseburger is supposed to cost $2.00 more than the soda.
If the soda is $0.50, that makes the cheeseburger, at two dollars more, cost $2.50. Add those together and the total price is $3.00, not $2.50. Something is amiss!
Would you believe that the soda costs $0.25? Check this out: The total price = $2.50. If you subtract $0.25 for the soda, that leaves $2.25 as the cost of the burger. $2.25 is exactly two dollars more than the soda.
So, why does this mistake happen?
The mix-up often happens when we conflate differences with portions—like confusing “percent more” with “percent of.” In plain language, it’s easy to slip into thinking, “$2 is 80% of $2.50, so the remaining 20% must be $0.50.” But that mental shortcut forgets to add the difference on top, so we never verify that the burger is actually $2 more than the soda. Failing to correctly incorporate the “extra” portion leads to a wrong conclusion.
